The Program provides students with the opportunity to pursue the certificate in bilingual Pupil Personnel Services. Coursework explores the academic, social, and political issues surrounding the education of children for whom English is a new language or who are growing up in bilingual environments. Bilingual education is supported by educational research on the education of limited English proficient students.
Practicum activities include observing and teaching in a bilingual or dual language classroom. In California – which has the nation’s highest rate of students who speak a non-English language at home – fewer than 5 percent of public schools now offer multilingual programs.
