Additional programs for adults that include, but are not limited to, older adults, are primarily related to entry or reentry into the workforce, or are primarily designed to help parents and caregivers develop knowledge and skills to assist elementary and secondary school children to succeed academically in school. Students bring diverse interests in how adult learning and education contributes to many areas of concern including: health education, gender and women’s learning, social activism, online learning, workplace learning, intercultural and multicultural issues, anti-oppression, program planning, adult literacy, English as an Additional Language, environmentalism, and internationalization.
Adult Education & Literacy instruction is designed to expand the educational opportunities for adults and to establish programs that will enable adults to acquire basic skills necessary to function in society and allow them to secure training that will enable them to become more employable, productive and responsible citizens as well as allowing them to continue their education to at least the level of completion of secondary school.
In addition, Penn State offers an online Postbaccalaureate Certificate in Distance Education and a Postbaccalaureate Certificate in Adult Basic Education (ABE) All of the credits you earn in these certificate programs may be applied toward the requirements for the Master’s Degree in Lifelong Learning and Adult Education, upon your acceptance into that program.
Adult Education programs serve individuals who are at least 16 years of age; are not enrolled or required to be enrolled in a secondary school under State Law; and who lack sufficient mastery of basic educational skills; do not have a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent; or cannot speak, read, or write the English language.
The $4,800 grant award called Mindful Teachers” will allow team leader, grant writer Mary Parady, EL & Language Arts Teacher and team members, Francesca Ford, English Teacher and Diane Salmeri, Hairdressing and Cosmetology Teacher the opportunity to learn, explore and research effective techniques into the way of mindful education and to introduce and implement mindfulness into the academic and trade areas.
